Diwali is a religious festival celebrated by the Hindu community – a large percentage of the population consists of East Indians and a significant amount are Hindus.
Many of the celebrations are held at the Diwali Nagar site, which is the official headquarters of the National Council of Indian Culture. The Celebration extends to homes and communities and on Diwali night, beautiful structures that are designed with bamboo to hold deyas (small clay pots filled with coconut oil and a wick), are lit to honour Mother Lakshmi, who takes away the darkness and brings in the light and all are welcomed to go and see. Many organizations have embraced this special festival with special events.
