Asa Wright Nature Center

Trip Info

Do you love nature? Interested in ecotourism? Spend a day at this world-class natural habitat in the Northern Range Mountains of Trinidad. The land, a former plantation, has period buildings and furniture. The center was established in 1967 by a non-profit group to preserve the habitat and community watershed. More than 1,500 acres of forest land is under the protection.

The center offers an excellent buffet lunch accompanied with seasonal (local) fresh fruit. While relaxing on the large veranda, you will see an amazing variety of birds at close range. Have your camera ready for pictures of Tanagers, Honey Creepers and Crested Oropendola.
Then it’s on to a two-hour guided tour through the well maintained nature trails. During the walk, you will have a chance to see some of the 108 mammals, 450 birds, 55 reptiles, 25 amphibians and 617 butterflies. Along the way, notice some of the more than 2,200 various plant species as well.

A very big attraction is the colony of the Oilbird in Dunston Cave. Their breeding colony is very easy to access. Bird watchers will delight in checking this one off their list as it is the world’s only nocturnal flying fruit-eating bird.

You will have time to explore on your own and bathe under a magnificent waterfall!

We look forward to guiding you!
